New year, new quilt

This is the first quilt of 2015. I made this quilt as a sample quilt for the new classes organised by Kilkenny ETB which is planed to start later in January(fingers crossed).

I like this block called “single Irish chain” and I am using it for the very beginner’s class because the construction is very simple(only squares) and basic but still it has dramatic effect. Google or pinterest for a lot of beautiful inspiration.

I only used two fabrics for the main part, bright yellow print and Kona solid white. You can make it as a scrap quilt or bring in few more colours. For me this time, I just wanted play with quilting on white.

I started quilting in ditch along the border and did straight stitches in diagonal lines through all the yellow squares. Then I quilted on the border with tree shapes and put the binding while I was thinking of what to do on the main part, white fabric.

Quilting some random trees on the border.

Started with drawing random diamond shapes which divided whole quilt into smaller sections.single irish chain by slaney handcraft

Then I re-divided them into much narrower sections and filled each section with free motion quilting.

I love the look of all the yellow squares are floating on the white background.

I really had fun quilting this one. A lot of shapes, motifs and sizes.

By the way the backing looks like this. Very busy print of cute apples and pears.

Hope you have a great fun quilting through 2015!
